This story is a beautiful collaborative work – and suitable for children between 2 and 3 years of age.
\nThe story is told by the legend of Martin. In doing so, the children recreate what they hear and thus illustrate the story. They work through their own actions on the contents of the story.<\/h2>\n

There's an open space.<\/span>Carpet, table, etc.<\/span><\/div>\n
Laying materials:<\/div>\n
For the city walls:<\/span>Building blocks of wood or foam, Lego or stones from the garden…<\/span><\/div>\n
For the city gate:<\/span>2 larger stones and a long stone or arch of wood, felt or put a branch over two blocks<\/span><\/div>\n
For the way:<\/span>A brown, grey or green cloth, towel, scarf or a few pebbles<\/span><\/div>\n
For the houses:<\/span>Building blocks that are assembled like houses or make houses out of cardboard<\/span><\/div>\n
1<\/span> <\/span> Saint Martin and a beggar:<\/span>Playmobil figures, Lego men, bending dolls or 2 characters<\/span><\/div>\n

Now we can begin!
\nTell as freely as possible and let the children put a lot of all the elements – even if this tears the story apart in our eyes. The children are much more intense with the laying work and keep the individual elements much better in mind. You will be amazed at how much the children still know about the second narration and how much they can already help with the laying of the elements. I'll tell you the story of Martin today.
\nMartin was a young man who was always diligent and loved helping others.
\nOne day the king came and said to him, "You are so diligent, I will have you as a soldier, you shall fight for me!"
\nMartin got an armor and a helmet – and even a big sword!
\n(I'll show the children!)<\/p>\n

Martin had to go far away to work as a soldier. However, when Martin lived, there were no cars yet and therefore he got a horse, that was his Jolanda.
\nHe was always with her. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Martin lived in a city. The city had a real wall around it. (We want to build this wall now.)<\/p>\n

The city wall had only one entrance and that was a big gate. (We are now building this in the city wall.)<\/p>\n

Inside in the wall, there were the houses of the people who lived there.
\n(Let's put them in now.) Tip: You can make the houses with the children first!<\/p>\n

In the city, however, not only people live, but also animals and they need a stable. (The stable is also added.)<\/p>\n

Anyone who wants to enter the city must walk the way through the city gate. (We lay the way to the gate with stones).<\/p>\n

Martin is on his way home to the city with his horse. (We're putting Martin and his horse on the way.)
\nIt's freezing cold. Martin has a big coat and because it's so cold, he rushes to get home quickly. But then his horse stops at once. (It stops right in front of the big gate.)
\nMartin discovers a poor man. He sits there and has broken clothes on and no coat at all. He freezes and is hungry.“Please, please give me something to eat, I am so hungry,“ begs the man. Martin gives him everything he has. The man trembles and freezes so much.
\nMartin takes his sword and divides his coat in the middle. Martin gives one half to the poor man and kills the other.
\nThe poor man is astonished and before he can say thank you Martin has ridden already further. He wanted to go home very quickly.<\/p>\n

Martin goes home and lies down in his bed. (We lay Martin on a house).
\nAt night Martin dreams that the poor man was Jesus. When he wakes up, he decides that he will no longer be a soldier. Martin prefers to help other people. <\/p>\n

He puts down his helmet and sword and no longer wants to go back to the king. <\/p>\n

When the king's people want to get him, Martin hides in the barn by the geese. He thought no one was looking for him.
\nBUT: the geese have snatched so loud (I snatched very loudly) that the people of King Martin have discovered. <\/p>\n

\n

He didn't go with the king's people. Martin became a priest and helped many people. That's why we celebrate our Martinsfest. To commemorate Martin, we walk through the streets with our lanterns and give people a light in the dark.<\/p>\n

At the end of our story, we light a lantern or a table light and sing a lantern song together. <\/p>\n

Improvise with what you have at your disposal. It does not depend on the beauty of the materials and whether everything fits together. Even if the horse (in our eyes) is relatively much too big, or the man is a cowboy. None of this matters. It depends on the content of the story!<\/p>\n
